Question by : How do I apply for a national insurance number? I'm currently 18 and applying for student loan through SAAS (Scotland), where I'm asked my national insurance number. I don't have one and I don't know how to get one. I tried calling the national insurance helpline and they said to contact Job Centre Plus. Job Centre Plus then tells me to ask student loan company since I'm not employed yet. So I called the student loan company and they told me to call SAAS directly since I'm living in Scotland. I called SAAS and asked about applying for a national insurance number and they said they don't do it and I have to call student loan company. This effectively sends me on an infinite loop and I'm on the verge of losing my sanity. All I need to know is how I can get a damn form to fill out and send to HM Revenue and Customs so they'll give me a national insurance number I can use to complete my application to SAAS. The first step is to determine what nation's national security number you need. If you need one for the United States, then you need to apply to the Social Security Administration. If you need one for Scotland, then you need to delete this question from Yahoo! Answers United States, and then post your question on the Yahoo! Answers United Kingdom.
