San Marcos, TX borders the San Marcos River and archaeologists have found artifacts that show that inhabitants had lived in the area dating back to over 12,000 years ago. The town is fed by the San Marcos Springs, which are the 2nd largest collection of natural springs in Texas. The constant flow of water from the Edwards Aquifer is the main reason that this is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the United States.
The city first saw its first Anglo settlers inhabit the area in 1846, after Texas became a part of the United States. It was established as the county seat for Hays County in Texas in 1848. The town itself was first established in 1851 when a group of early settlers purchased a tract of land belonging to Juan Martin de Veramendi.
Ten years after the International-Great Northern Railroad arrived in San Marcos, two staples provided the fuel for commercial growth; cotton and cattle.
Along with these two products, the business of transportation was introduced to the community.At the end of the 19th century, another industry began taking its foothold in the community. The Southwest Texas State Normal School was formed in 1899 as a predominantly teaching college. This school would later change its name to the Texas State University-San Marcos. Secondary industries, like restaurants and Texas State University Housing also came along as a result of the university's addition to the city.
In the 1960's, the tourism industry joined the existing commercial services being supplied in the town, with the creation of the Aquarena Springs. This entertainment facility and amusement park, built around the Springs, is now the home of the Texas State University-San Marcos Aquarena Center.
