They are going to want the full amount, calling them won't do much but make them laugh at you. You owe them that money no matter interest or not. You need to figure out how to pay them off. Even if you pay them off, it won't get off your credit until you earn back all the damage it has done with good new credit. The credit limit on your American Express is no good, just because you have credit to use, doesn't mean that you have good credit.

Not sure that showing it "settled" is going to make a huge difference. Keep doing what you are doing....you shouldn't have closed your Amex. Keep accounts open. In a year or 2 your score should be better.

While you'll never get financed with an outstanding balance, being settled will only allow you to "possibly" get approved. If Wachovia still owns the note they probably will not settle. If they sold the toxic debt you have a better chance of reducing it. Try, call them up, see if they still have it, and offer 3000 to put it to rest. Calling them will not change whether they plan to sue you, they'll get around to you sooner or later. Again though, once that is settled, it will be very difficult to get a loan, and forget about a good loan, you will be paying very high interest for a long time.
